The Supreme Court of Philippines has issued a Temporary Restraining Order against the Election Commission’s order to take down the notorious “Team Patay, Team Buhay” poster at the San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) ordered Bishop Vicente Navarra to remove the poster which allegedly divides congressional candidates into those on the deadly team to those on the lively team.
The controversial poster lists down the names of senatorial bets in upcoming elections that the diocese claim should not get the public’s votes as they favored the Reproductive Health Law. The poster mentions names of Juan Edgardo Angara, Francis Escudero, Loren Legarda, Alan Peter Cayetano, Risa Hontiveros, Teddy Casiño and Jack Enrile. Party-list groups Gabriela, Bayan Muna, Akbayan and Anak Pawis are also on the Team Patay list.
According to Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. his office has objections on the large size of the poster and not on its content. Apparently, the content is believed to be against the congressional candidates of President Benigno Aquino.
“I am worried that the SC entertained this petition since the Comelec merely told them to remove the oversized campaign material, and just comply with the rule on the legal poster size. I don’t really know the consequence of this TRO. It might encourage others to come out with similar illegal campaign propaganda,” Brillantes said.
