Parliamentarians unite to take down the black sheep of news media industry in Pakistan. The National Assembly passed a unanimous resolution against journalists who put on air erroneous information with the aim of defaming certain parliamentarians.
The National Assembly on Wednesday lashed out on a particular anchorperson while acknowledging that majority is definitely performing their duties both lawfully and morally. The resolution, moved by the Federal Minister Sheikh Waqas Akram, received complete support from the opposition. Lt. General (retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch (PML-N), Wasim Akhtar (MQM) and Ms Bushra Gohar signed it on behalf of their parties.
Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza affirmed that the resolution will be presented to the court in order to maintain the dignity parliament. The house urged the owners of media houses to terminate those anchorpersons who spread wrong information without checking the real facts.
“The television channels should also adopt a code of conduct and make sure that it is implemented in letter and spirit. The media should also project as to how we strengthened parliament and democracy,” Fehmida Mirza said.
According to Sheikh Waqas Akram, an anchorperson personally targeted him during his show while passing derogatory remarks against him. He alleged that this is the same anchorperson who during the movement for restoration of judiciary publically stated that the chief justice deserves to be hanged.
While Hamid Mir has successfully impressed parliamentarians who quote him as an example for immoral journalists, Shazia Marri of the PPP criticized a promotional advertisement on education telecasted on Geo. Marri claims that the advertisement implies that politicians are responsible for the plight of education, saying it could impair democracy.
