A soldier and another three gunmen were reported dead during a standoff at Sungai Nyamuk near Kampung Tanjung Batu on Tuesday. The operation against the Sulu gunmen who occupied area near Kampung Tanduo on Feb 12 has witnessed several deaths; however, no soldier was reported dead until today.

According to Armed Forces chief Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin, the joint military and police forces were conducting mopping and searching operation at 7.45am on Tuesday when the soldiers had a gun fight with five armed men who then retreated.

“In the exchange of fire a soldier and three terrorists were killed,” Jen Zulkifeli said.

The Malaysian government had warned that there would be no ceasefire until the terrorists laid down their arms and surrendered unconditionally. While the governments negotiate, thousands of Suluks residing illegally in Sabah have returned to Sulu. On Sunday, over 1,000 Suluks boarded barter boats from Sandakan for southern Philippines.

On the other hand, the Sabah Forestry Department has announced to donate RM 20,000 to the Lahad Datu Heroes Fund formed by Media Prima Berhad in appreciation of the security forces. The Sabah Forestry Department director Datuk Sam Mannan presented the cheque to Media Prima Berhad representative Ronnie Sidom on Tuesday.

“We hope this small token can help lessen the burden of the families of the heroes who were killed while defending our country. This contribution is nothing compared to the sacrifices they have made for our nation,” Mannan said.
