The Supreme Court of India has sustained a death sentence of one of the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts. The orders were upheld against Yakub Memon, brother of Tiger Memon, the main culprit in the case.

India still grieves in the memory of March 12, 1993 when the serial blasts killed 257 people and injured 700 in Mumbai. Moreover, property worth Rs 27 crore was also damaged. Allegedly, Tiger Memon, underworld dons Dawood Ibrahim and Mohammed Dossa planned the blasts in Dubai. The blasts led to communal riots that broke out post-Babri masjid demolition.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is alarmed by the announcement as he was also among the accused. Earlier, Dutt was sentenced to six years in prison for possessing illegal weaponry; however, he was later acquitted under TADA. In August 2007, Dutt moved the Supreme Court challenging his conviction, and sought bail. He was granted bail in November 2007. CBI has reportedly filed 48 appeals seeking enhancement of sentence which does not include Dutt’s acquittal under TADA.

In 2009, Dutt announced that he would fight the Lok Sabha elections as a Samajwadi Party candidate. He withdrew his candidacy when the Supreme Court refused to suspend his conviction in the Mumbai blasts case and was appointed General Secretary of the party instead. The next year, he quit the party – and politics, in general.
