Indonesian volcano Merapi erupts
A recent volcanic eruption occurred on the Indonesian island of Java, specifically at Mount Merapi, the most active volcano in the country. The eruption caused thick clouds of smoke and a lava flow with stones coming down the mountain’s slope, resulting in the sun no longer being visible and surrounding villages covered in ash. Although there are no reports of casualties, the Indonesian authorities have halted mining and tourism activities in the region.
Mount Merapi is an almost 3000 meter high mountain located a few tens of kilometers from the city of Yogyakarta. Several hundred thousand people live in a radius of ten kilometers around the volcano. The eruption is the strongest since the alert level for volcanoes was raised to the second highest level in November 2020.
Indonesia has about 120 active volcanoes, and volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur regularly in the country. The archipelago is located on the Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped area with a lot of seismic activity due to shifting tectonic plates.
