The apex court has directed Karachi police to submit a comprehensive report about the detainment of all criminals who were granted bails despite having confessed to killing several people. The apex court was dazed to learn that at least 71 such criminals were set free.

Five-judge special bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry carefully scrutinized the reports of joint investigation team (JIT). Advocate General Fateh Malik represented the Sindh government, Advocate Shahid Anwar Bajwa appeared on behalf of the director general of Rangers and Inspector General Shahid Nadeem Baloch and Prosecutor General Shahadat Awan appeared in person.

“This is all a political game. You have to take the bull by its horns. You play havoc with the destiny of ordinary people but treat the criminals in a cursory manner. This is appalling and shameful that criminals are never proceeded against to the logical end,” Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan said.

The court discovered that a criminal named Muneer Ahmed had confessed to have killed 115 people but was still released on bail. He was charged under Section 353 for assault on a public servant to deter him from discharging official duties instead of being charged under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code for killing.

“Is it not a crime that the killers were never prosecuted on murder charges despite confessions about their crime?” Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed asked.

The Supreme Court has directed the Rangers DG and Karachi police to immediately arrest all those persons and deal with them strictly in accordance with the law.
