Malaysian Child Resource Institute has protested against the recent rape case of a 13-year-old who was then wedded to her alleged rapist. Restaurant manager Riduan Masmud allegedly raped an underage girl, Inanam, four months ago and while the case was still ongoing, he married her with the girl’s consent.
“She is still a child and comes from an impoverished family. His statement that many other men are marrying underage girls begs the question of whether something is right just because everyone’s doing it,” Governor of Malaysian Child Resource Institute Ruth Liew said.
Liew said if this case is dealt with leniency, it will set a wrong example for teenage girls who would be encouraged to take decisions they should not be taking at their age. She said the long term impacts of this case should be keenly considered since the law does not want to give a free hand to rapists.
The prosecution withdrew the case against Riduan on May 7 since he took the little girl as his second wife. Riduan is already married and has four children. PS The Children executive director Malathy Nagasayee said allowing this would set a precedent for girls to become more vulnerable to violence and sexual abuse.
“It is a great concern for society that older men use this as weapon against underage girls to escape prosecution. Prosecution should be mandatory in statutory rape cases and marriage cannot be a solution as the perpetrator manipulates and exploits the vulnerability of the underage girl and family,” she said.
