The active mediator between Pakistan government and outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has urged the elected leadership and Pakistan Army to be on the same page before making any attempts to initiate peace-talks.

Maulana Samiul Haq has been approached by the incoming government to facilitate peace-talks with the outlawed groups. Haq is the chancellor of Darul Uloom Haqqania academy, home to many Taliban fighters. He is considered a valuable asset who can help both sides find a common ground.

“Before accepting the role of go-between, I would need an assurance that the future prime minister, Nawaz Sharif, and Pakistan Army are on the same page on the issue. The government will have to show a strong commitment to the proposed peace process.  Currently, it’s a wish of the government – but this festering issue demands commitment and seriousness,” Haq maintained.

Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf have been reiterating that negotiation is one the viable options to diminish terrorism in the region. Prospective Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that he believes dialogue is the best option for restoring peace in the country.

“It is essential that the civilian and military leaderships take a unanimous decision on the issue of peace talks with the Taliban. Meaningful talks cannot be pursued if the two stakeholders have divergent or conflicting approaches to the issue. I would need an assurance from Islamabad that it would not surrender to international pressure. If Pakistan backed out under US pressure, it would spell disaster,” he warned.
