Indian government has formed a panel tasked to investigate the tragic incident in Chhattisgarh state on Saturday. High court judge Prashant Mishra has been assigned the duty to probe the notorious attack on Congress rally led by Maoist rebels. The report is expected to be submitted in the span of three months.

“[Justice Mishra will investigate] the circumstances under which the incident occurred on 25 May, whether it could have been averted, whether there were lapses in providing adequate security, and whether all security measures were followed by security agencies as well as the organizers of the Congress party rally,” Press Trust of India reported late on Tuesday night, quoting an official in the state government.

In addition, the relevant police department has been cleansed in the wake of heated criticism that security lapse might have facilitated the rebels in executing their plan. Several Congress leaders, top state politicians and policemen lost their lives in the pre-monitored attack. Chhattisgarh Congress party Chief Nandkumar Patel, his son, and local leader Mahendra Karma were among the dead while former federal minister Vidya Charan Shukla was among the dozens who received grave injuries.

Claiming the responsibility, Maoist rebels condemned government’s anti-people policies. Maoist rebels are pulling out similar stunts in central and eastern India for the past four decades. They claim to be fighting for the rights of poor and are advocates of communism.
