The United States is actively coming forward to engage with the newly elected members of Pakistan’s government in order to ensure that the previously achieved understanding between the two countries remains intact.

On Thursday, US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP) Ambassador James Dobbins held meetings with Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif. He also spoke to President Asif Ali Zardari over a phone call since he was residing in Karachi.

The rationale behind Ambassador Dobbins’ engagements was to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues including counterterrorism objectives, economic opportunities, importance of civilian democracy and civil society with special emphasis on Afghan-led reconciliation process.

Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani agreed that it is highly desirable for Pakistan to strengthen its bilateral relations and partnership with the US in order to ensure peace and stability in the region. Lt Gen (r) Doug Lute, special assistant to the US President, and Ambassador Richard Hoagland, US Embassy charge d’ affaires also accompanied Ambassador Dobbins during his visits.

Ambassador Dobbins met PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif in Lahore. Both agreed to strengthen the ties between both countries. The Ambassador also congratulated Nawaz Sharif on winning the May 11 general elections. This was Dobbins first visit to Pakistan after the historic elections. Earlier, he also visited Afghanistan and met the top leadership there.
