Indian authorities have claimed that Pakistan has once again violated the border ceasefire and allegedly shot down a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) in Saujiyan-Mandi sector of Poonch district in Jammu division.

The incident has yet again increased tension on the Line of Control (LoC). It was the first one reported by the Indian army after Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister offered olive branch to India and assured to cooperate in settling all outstanding issues including Kashmir.

“They used pika guns, rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and under barrel grenade launchers (to attack the Indian positions),” said SN Acharya, the officiating defence spokesman at Jammu.

Sources confirm that a naib-subedar of the Indian army allegedly received serious injuries in the crossfire. Later he succumbed to injuries in a hospital. The soldier has been identified as Bachan Singh.

“The firing lasted for around 30-40 minutes… We retaliated in a controlled manner. But the JCO, Subedar Bachan Singh of Garhwal Rifles, was killed due to splinter injuries. With the snow melting and mountain passes opening, there has been a spike in the cross-border infiltrations… Pakistan has already violated the ceasefire 32 times since January, resorting to their old tactic of giving covering fire to infiltrators,” said a senior officer.

Defence minister A K Antony has time after time urged Pakistan to translate its promises into sincere action if it wants to improve – or even maintain – bilateral ties.
