Malaysian government faces multiple challenges including corruption and negative perception of law-enforcement bodies. Senior government officials including Federal Territories Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor maintain that such issues will take time and strategy before they can be eliminated.

“If there is a taker, there surely will be a giver. Bribe-giving must stop for corruption to end. The government is doing its best. As we are dealing with humans, it takes time and effort to change them. Even religion is against corruption, but there are people who still take and offer bribes. To label the police as corrupt is not fair. Everyone needs to be educated on bribery,” he said.

Tengku Adnan also acknowledged the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for playing a critical role in fighting corruption. He also extended his full support for a new law that should replace the Emergency Ordinance (EO).

“We are worried with what is happening since we abolished the EO and the Internal Security Act. We need laws to not just punish but to deter. Deterrence is better than punishment,” he added.

Premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak and cabinet members are scheduled to study the proposed law. The cabinet would ascertain that the proposed law does not contradict with basic rights of the people.

“Malaysia is a multiracial country. We are united in diversity. We were taught by our forefathers to facilitate and tolerate but this is deteriorating. We need a way to remind the younger generation of this. However, the Opposition stirs things until (it) becomes chaotic,” he added.
