An Afghan delegation met with significant political and government figures in Islamabad to discuss important matters that are to play crucial role in the development of both countries. Pakistan’s Finance Minister Ishaq Dar took the opportunity to propose a double taxation treaty to his Afghan counterpart Dr Hazrat Omer Zakhiwal.

The Afghan dignitaries showed keen interest in the proposed treaty and encouraged similar agreements which will boost the economy of both countries. Dr Zakhiwal said the proposed treaty will attract a significant number of private investors while businesses on both sides will nourish. He also acknowledged the success and experience of the construction companies in Pakistan. He invited them to take part in the huge infrastructure development projects introduced in Afghanistan and reap benefit out of it.

Both sides mutually agreed that Pakistan and Afghanistan have immense economic potential and that public and private sectors should come forward with viable projects to strengthen the bilateral trade between both countries.

Joint management of common rivers starting with construction of a 1,500MW hydropower project on Kunar River was also discussed. It was decided at a meeting on Sunday that management of rivers should be discussed in-depth on both technical and political forums during President Hamid Karzai’s visit to Pakistan.

Following the cooperation on 1,500MW hydropower project on Kunar River, Pakistan and Afghanistan are planning to discuss the Kabul River Basin Management Commission — an agreement similar to the Indus Waters Commission between Pakistan and India.
