Schools are important platforms for less well-off Singaporeans to move up and make good in life, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong this Friday, at the National Junior College (NJC) 45th anniversary dinner.

“Most importantly, it has helped to keep paths upwards open to all Singaporeans,” said Mr Lee, who graduated from NJC in 1970. “Our schools are important platforms for us to level up Singaporeans who start off from less advantaged backgrounds, so that every child can have the opportunity to fulfill his potential.” The Prime Minister added that NJC has kept the pathways of education keep an upward trend and also have kept their doors open to all.

“It’s intake of JC 1 and Secondary 1 students comes from almost 100 secondary and primary schools,” he said. “NJC actively seeks out students from humble backgrounds and offers talented ones bursaries to defray their educational expenses. NJC promotes a culture of moderation and restraint, so all students and staff feel comfortable and interact on equal terms with one another.” The dinner hosted by NJC included about 700 alumni which was held at Mandarin Orchard Singapore and was attended by Mr Teo Ho Pin, mayor for the North West District, MPs Hri Kumar Nair and Chen Show Mao, and Ms Ho Peng, Director-General of Education.
