For Afghanistan cricket has become an insightful metaphor reflective of the Afghan people and their Government now creating their own secure and prosperous future in the world.
Australia’s Commander in Afghanistan, Major General David Mulhall, AM, CSC said the unity of cricket is strengthening relationships.
“Sport unites the world in many respects and there is an extraordinary excitement here in Afghanistan surrounding the Afghan cricket team’s World Cup participation,” Major General Mulhall said.
In anticipation of Wednesday’s Australia vs. Afghanistan WACA ICC Cricket World Cup match, deployed ADF members in the Afghan capital of Kabul hosted a lead up indoor game with Afghan locals.
Since January 2015 the international community and Australia opened a new chapter in relations with Afghanistan with the end of combat operations and transition to the NATO-led Resolute Support mission.
Australia remains committed to supporting Afghanistan’s security, governance and future development.
Australia supports the Resolute Support mission through Operation Highroad, with around 400 ADF personnel deployed across Afghanistan in a variety of roles.
The seven-a-side indoor game was held at NATO’s Headquarters Resolute Support gymnasium.
Reflecting Afghanistan’s progress and natural ability, the Afghan locals won the encounter 113 runs to the ADF’s 70.
