“The security challenges we all face are not bound by geography. Those present have shown a willingness to share their knowledge and experiences to address the extremist threat together,” Air Chief Marshal Binskin said.

“Through our discussions, we have increased our collective understanding of the threat we face and taken positive steps to further develop cooperation among our respective nations so that we are all better postured to address the challenges ahead.

“Current coalition operations against Daesh in Iraq and Syria have highlighted the importance of international cooperation against the shared threat of violent extremism.

“As a result of coalition support to Iraqi Forces, Daesh is under increasing pressure. The extremists have lost a significant number of fighters and about 51 per cent of the territory they once held in Iraq.

“Australia is making a substantial contribution to the broader US-led coalition fighting Daesh through the Australian Air Task Group and our missions to train the Iraqi forces.

“These ADF elements will continue to conduct operations to support the Iraqi Security Forces throughout the Mosul offensive and beyond.”

The Defence Chiefs met at Joint Base Andrews, Marylands, USA.
