As an outcome of a successful gay rights rally recently held in front of the office of Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, the controversial Australian Sex Party (ASP) is all excited to put forward their candidate to run in Mount Isa.

The rally was led by gay rights activist James Newburrie, which involved roughly 70 backers who could be seen holding signs and singing catchcries on Simpson Street. According to the spokesperson of ASP, Fiona Patten, the party was still in the initial phase of positioning a candidate to run in the area in time for the 2012 Queensland state election.

Patten added: “It’s almost 90-per-cent certain that we will be running a candidate in the near future, we believe people are ready for a civil libertarian view in politics… We weren’t expecting that many (attendees), but we were happy to support it whether it was James on his own or a cast of thousands.”

She also said that while countless prejudiced laws against gay and lesbian couples have been fruitfully eliminated, the national Marriage Act ought to be altered to “take Australia into the 21st century.”

She said: “Fundamentally it comes down to discrimination. The Marriage Act is a piece of legislation, and no Australian legislation should discriminate against people on the grounds of their sexuality.”
