Lizzie Watkins, one of the best hockey players of Australia, died at the age of 24 after being hit by a ball on the field during the game late Sunday.

According to various news sources, Watkins was hit in the back of her head during the game. She was immediately given medical help after she collapsed on the field and was being taken to a nearby hospital when she gave her life on the way. Lizzie’s sister, Cath Carroll, was also playing the same match and rushed to her sister’s side as soon as the ball hit her.

Carmel Goodman, the doctor on the field, expressed that she has never seen or even heard of such an injury on the field ever before. She said there are high chances that Watkin suffered from internal bleeding as soon as the ball hit her.

The executive of Hockey Australia Mark Anderson said, “Hockey is a sport that is known for its strong sense of community. I know that members of our two national teams and players involved at all levels of our sport are saddened by this tragic event. The Kookaburras wore black arm bands in the final of the London International Invitational Hockey Tournament overnight out of respect for Lizzie and her family.”
