Wayne Swan highlighted the considerable combination of household payments that have been delivered to millions of Australians since the Federal Budget. He said that a group of his colleagues would be a game changer for the fate of the Federal Labor government.

Swan addressed a Business Council of Australia in which he said that economic forum in Brisbane has agreed that productivity growth needed to focus on education, cutting red tape and skills.

He said, “we all agree that further boosting our competitiveness is essential to locking in our success in the Asian Century.”

Swan was acting as a Prime Minister while Julia Gillard was attending the G20 meeting in Mexico, expected that opposition leader Tony Abbott would discover himself in a “policy cul-de-sac” when his persistent pessimism about the carbon tax proved to be exaggerated. He said that “Mr. Abbott was running a scare campaign by exaggerating every possible price increase and then multiplying by 10.”
Labor MPs told their constituents that forthcoming rises in electricity prices were not just because of the carbon tax.
Mr. Abbott was planning a national tour on the carbon tax in less than three weeks after its introduction. He told a joint party room meeting in Canberra that he and some of his shadow ministers would embark on the tour in the first two weeks of next month.
