A Northern Territory Supreme Court unanimously acquitted former AFL player Liam Jurrah who was accused of attacking his cousin at a party. The jury based on five men and seven women took eight hours to announce the verdict.

Liam was accused of causing serious harm to his 35-year-old cousin, Basil Jurrah, in an Alice Springs town camp last March. His fans and family members commended the court for taking the right decision. Liam said it remained his dream to return to elite football, after he was delisted by Melbourne last year.

“Yes, that is my dream … it’s very important to make my family happy again. I’ll probably be heading back to Adelaide now to see where I’m at … I’m feeling pretty happy right now,” he maintained.

Liam was eventually acquitted as court found conflicting remarks and accounts from the witnesses. Defence lawyer John Tippett QC told the jury that some witnesses were lying through their teeth.

“This young man has had a hell of a lot riding on his shoulders and this is just a culmination of a lot of them. It’s the sort of stuff that I wouldn’t want to happen to me and it’s a thing that’s cross-cultural. We have great expectations of him. His Aboriginal community, his family have great expectations and we have put a lot on his plate,” Mr Tippett said outside the court.

“We said he was not guilty in the beginning and this jury has spent a long time examining the evidence and concluded that’s right – he’s not guilty.

“They had a fair bit of evidence and material to go through … so they were a conscientious group of people and as the judge said, they did the community proud, they did themselves proud and we know the system works well,” he added.
