Prime Minister Julia Gillard is trying to use the media to promote her new-look ministry and protect the shattered image of her government. She appeared on ABC TV’s 7.30 and urged people to encourage the positive steps taken by her government instead of finding loopholes.

“Ultimately, I believe people should judge the Government on what is achieved for the nation and for them in their lives, for their families and the plans we’ve got for the future. People are entitled to look at what we’ve achieved. We have had a governing sense of purpose, what we’ve lacked is a sense of unity and now that is resolved,” PM Gillard said.

“After the week that was, with the internal issues of the Labor Party… certainly what we’ve got to do is make sure that every day we’re getting up and saying to ourselves how can we do better for the Australian people than we did the day before,” she added.

Ms Gillard said despite all the tensions, her government has successfully passed through parliament the National Disability Insurance Scheme to allocate more funds for childcare workers and raise pensions. However, the exemplary failure of controversial media laws has stained the reputation of Gillard’s administration. The media bill had to be withdrawn from parliament after Labor failed to win enough cross-bench support.

In the meanwhile, New Zealand’s three-term Labor Prime Minister Helen Clark seems to be hesitant while giving a political advice to PM Gillard as she approaches a federal election. However, PM Clark openly shared her observations on dealing with gender issues.

“When I became Leader of the Opposition, it was very hard to establish myself as leader. And without doubt there was a gender factor in that. But you just have to get on and deal with that, which I did,” PM Clark said.
