As Kevin Rudd swore in as the new Prime Minister of Australia on Wednesday, the election date remains undecided. Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is putting undue pressure on the new premier to announce the election date.

The Coalition is also struggling to move the election date to the earliest so the new prime minister can be elected. Experts have indicated that elections can take place as early as August 3 and as late as November 30.

“(There is) this whole issue of who should choose the prime minister. Should it be the powerbrokers of the Labor Party – the faceless men – or should it be the people? Right around Australia at the moment people are saying: give us the chance, restore our country into our hands. For too long, the prime ministership has been the subject of backdoor deals, of horse-trading in the Parliament. We are sick of it. We are over it. Let us be the Australia we know we can be, again,” Abbott exclaimed.

Meanwhile, several ministers handed over their resignations as Julia Gillard stepped down as premier. Rudd will soon announce his new Cabinet. Reportedly, Senator Penny Wong will become the Leader in the Senate while Senator Don Farrell will remain as Minister for Science and Research and assisting in Tourism.

“I would draw (Mr Abbott’s) attention to facts, which are material to the consideration of the Government. Number one is the timing of the G20 summit in St Petersburg, which is scheduled for the 6th and 7th of September. Number two is the timing of the local government referendum, and the third is the current coincidence of the election date with (Jewish holy day) Yom Kippur. I will therefore go through these issues with my Cabinet colleagues,” PM Rudd said.
