Chief Minister Northern Territory Adam Giles has denied discussing special taxation zones with PM Ruddy or his party. Kevin Rudd has recently proposed establishing a special taxation zone in NT, aiming to equip local companies with a more business friendly environment. However, the proposal has not yet been discussed with the NT government and business chiefs.

“What Kevin Rudd announced today was little more than a thought bubble in the dying days of a bad Labor government. What we all want to see is the development of northern Australia but we want to see a comprehensive policy approach to how he will do that,” said Giles.

According to Giles, the establishment of special taxation zones is purely a political act to win more votes in the upcoming elections. He said the Labor party is not genuinely concerned for the development of northern Australia; instead it is focused on gaining electoral support.

“The Northern Territory government is focused on developing the NT and taking a leadership role in developing northern Australia. Whoever is in government federally, we will work with, but they will dovetail into the back of what the NT’s going to do and we won’t be dictated to by Canberra,” he added.

PM Rudd has promised to establish new zones with decreased company tax rates if he returns to power. Trashing Labor party’s proposal, Giles said the development plans proposed by the coalition are more coherent and well-crafted.

“Six months ago, the assistant treasurer David Bradbury described Tony Abbott’s plan for northern Australia as ‘wacky’ so I am not sure how he would describe Kevin Rudd’s plan,” he said.
