The asylum seekers boat that sank off Indonesia was allegedly abandoned by its captain five days before it ran out of fuel and hit strong waves. According to the survivors, the boat was lost in the sea for days as they had no sense of direction and kept floating without having enough fuel.

The boat was on its way to Australia, where the government had already decided to send all asylum seekers back to Jakarta. The accident killed at least 22 out of 120 asylum seekers whereas 70 are feared missing. The fatalities include a large number of women and children. Their remains were found on a beach in a local estuary, while 25 people were found alive. Indonesia lacks the resources and skills to search in big sea, especially at night time.

Earlier, the Indonesian foreign minister Marty Natalegawa expressed concern over the asylum seekers’ ships been returned to Jakarta. PM Abbott is expected to visit Indonesia on Monday. He maintained that the two countries have been allies for a very long time and they share a strong bond based on solid reality. However, he has not commented on the recent accident.

“The last thing that anyone should want is to have Australia’s relationship with Indonesia defined by this boats issue, which I am sure will be but a passing irritant. That is one of the many reasons why it is so important to stop the boats, because I do not want, what is in so many respects, our most important relationship to be needlessly complicated by this,” Abbott said last week.
