Weather ForecastHeavy snow and severely cold weather in London has led to the cancellation of one-third of the scheduled flights from Heathrow. Luton and Stansted airports had to be briefly closed overnight due to snow.

According to the latest reports, within the last 24 hours, up to 10cm (4in) of snow and the temperatures have fallen to -12 along with wind chill made the weather significantly colder. Transport for London (TfL) had told that 100,000 tonnes of salt was ready to be put on the roads and that co-ordination across districts had been improved.

Airport operator BAA, Heathrow airlines, and air traffic control have mutually agreed to introduce a revised flight schedule in an effort to “minimize the disruption to passengers” caused by severe weather. However, the airport expects that more than 70% of passengers will still be able to travel as airlines transfer them between flights. All London’s air passengers have been advised to contact their specific airline for more information.

The Met Office has foretold that the current snow falling is expected to be the biggest and most widespread snow dump of this winter. Saturday is expected to be the coldest day of winter, with -12C temperatures due in the early hours feeling like -15C due to bitter wind-chill.

To keep Tube service operational, several actions have also been taken. However, some lines still get disrupted on Saturday night.

The Jubilee Line was suspended, and part suspensions were witnessed on the Metropolitan, Northern and Piccadilly lines.

Road traffic was also interrupted since last evening as snow hit southern Scotland and parts of Wales before moving south-east through England.

Within the outlying areas of the Tube network that suffered last year, quality improvement have also been made including to bring  in extra stocks of components and taking precautions to avoid wheels slipping on the Central line.
