Britain has refused the Argentinian claim of sending a vessel capable of carrying nuclear weapons to the South Atlantic during the rising tensions with Argentina over the disputed area of the Falklands.
The latest disagreement has come out as British officials were braced for intensifying diplomatic pressure from Buenos Aires in the lead up to the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.
The latest reports have suggested that U.K. had dispatched a nuclear-powered but conventionally-armed Trafalgar class submarine to the region. The Ministry of Defence is hesitant to confirm or deny this deployment.
Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg has dismissed the claims made by Argentina as totally baseless in a clash with the Argentine foreign minister at the international Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, South Korea.
The Argentinian minister, Héctor Timerman has referred Britain to an “extra-regional power” and claimed that it had deployed a submarine “capable of carrying nuclear weapons”, thus violating the Tlatelolco treaty, which guarantees a nuclear weapons-free zone covering Latin America and the Caribbean.
The sharp exchanges by the two representatives have resulted in worsening diplomatic relations between Argentina and Britain in the run-up to next month’s 30th anniversary of the Falklands war.
The leading person of the British delegation at the summit, Mr. Clegg has strongly rejected the allegation and responded:
“I’m sure our colleague from Argentina knows, the United Kingdom ratified the protocols to the treaty in 1969 … which guarantees a nuclear weapons-free zone covering Latin America and the Caribbean.
“We have respected those obligations since 1969 and we will continue to do so.”
