A royal visit from The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall has been given to Irwin’S Bakery in Portadown to mark its 100th anniversary on Friday.
The Royal Highnesses were welcomed there by the Lord-Lieutenant of County Armagh, the Rt Hon The Earl of Caledon, Upper Bann MP David Simpson, Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Alan Carson, their respective spouses and Irwin’s Bakery chairman and technical director, Brian and Niall Irwin respectively.
The royal couple has celebrated their family bakery’s 100th birthday, now run by the third generation. During the 90-minute visit, they have watched the making of farls and potato bread and had spoken to their staff. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess then socialized with the guests, including celebrity chef Paul Rankin. Afterwards, the Prince unveiled a plaque to commemorate the royal visit and cutting a 100th anniversary cake with a sword.
The royal business has grown from its days of horse and cart delivery to current trends of exporting branded products across the U.K. and Ireland with major supermarkets.
The royal couple signed the visitors’ book before they left. The royal couple left the bakery to warm applause to continue their two-day visit to Northern Ireland by travelling to Armagh City where the Royal Highnesses will take in a tour of Armagh Gaol and the planetarium.
The Prince then arrived to loud cheers from the crowd that had gathered outside. Before stepping into the prison, the Prince Charles walked around the crowd, stopping to pat a Corgi dog owned by a woman, Hilda Oliver. The Royal Highness has also revealed his plans to convert the historic building of former prison into a hotel and cultural space.
