The Scottish National Party has agreed upon letting the U.K. Electoral Commission to test the independence referendum question’s wording to be appeared on the ballot paper.
Labour greeted the announcement as a major change in the SNP’s stance, after the Nationalists had previously dug in over who should instruct upon the wording. The Holyrood administration had wanted to decide on important issues regarding the referendum proposed for autumn 2014.
The change has been announced as more than 21,000 responses were received for its consultation on the issue, which closed at midnight.
SNP strategy minister, Bruce Crawford has confirmed this news yesterday: “As part of its role, the commission will also be asked to conduct the testing of the ballot paper.”
Electoral commissioner for Scotland, John McCormick has greeted the minister’s announcement, who will also be responsible for monitoring the body accountable for regulating the referendum.
Mr. McCormick has said: “Our priority has always been that any referendum must be run in the interests of voters. We therefore welcome the Scottish Government’s announcement that it wants us to play a role in both regulating the referendum and undertaking independent testing of the referendum question. We look forward to sorting out the precise details with them in the coming months.”
In the meantime, the former Scottish Socialist leader, Tommy Sheridan has recommended that independence referendum should be declared a public holiday, in his submission to the Scottish Government’s referendum consultation.
David Cameron has also said yesterday that he wanted urgent talks between the Scottish Secretary, Michael Moore and the First Minister, Alex Salmond. The Prime Minister’s spokesperson has stated: “We need to get on with this sooner rather than later. The continuing uncertainty is damaging to Scotland.”
The Scottish Government has announced that the published results of its consultation would be available over summer after the completion of an independent analysis.
