Prime Minister, David Cameron is considering the benefits cut plan that unemployed people could face in case of living outside the south-east of England.
Mr. Cameron has delivered a speech in Kent where he said welfare was causing deep social divisions between the employed and those on benefits. Mr. Cameron has demanded an end to what he called Britain’s “culture of entitlement”. He is expecting the youth to live with their parents instead of receiving state subsidies to live away from home; to introduce time-limited unemployment benefits; and to restrict handouts to people with large numbers of children.
Mr. Cameron has indicated that the state was spending £2billion a year on housing benefits for under-25s. He said: ‘So for literally millions, the passage to independence is several years living in their childhood bedroom as they save up to move out; while for many others, it’s a trip to the council where they can get housing benefit at 18 or 19 – even if they’re not actively seeking work.’
Mr. Prime minister has also proposed for making the long-term unemployed carry out full-time community work or lose all their benefits.
Mr. Cameron was also set to propose ending the link between the proportionate increases in benefits w.r.t. inflation, and suggested that benefits could increase in line with wages.
There are high chances that these proposals will inevitably spark a furious backlash from Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs, as well as campaign groups and benefit recipients. But Mr. Cameron has shown the determination to bring in radical welfare reforms to reshape British society to reward work.
