South West heavy rain fall lead to sever flood alerts

Much of the England, Scotland and Wales remain on flood alert as heavy rain have continued to cause disaster.

People in South Wales and the South West are getting ready to protect their homes and property as more than three inches of rain threatens to cause rivers and streams to break their banks.

Motorists are also being warned of risks from surface water on roads.

The Environment Agency has issued 71 flood warnings and 165 flood alerts across England and Wales, while a severe weather warning, urging people to take action, is in place for south Devon and eastern parts of Cornwall. The Environment Agency has issued the most severe warning in one area of Devon.

The flooding also led to as many as 30,000 Formula One fans being told to stay away from qualifying day for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone due to water logged car parks.

The London to Scotland East Coast main railway line got a second time hit in little over a week, with services between Peterborough and Doncaster subject to 90-minute hold-ups, while other rail services have faced delays, cancellations and diversions.

Many parts of the country received more than half the average rainfall for July on Friday. The Met Office has forecasted that between the showers on Saturday conditions should be bright, with temperatures reaching 20C. Forecasters have warned that the washout summer is set to continue with an unlikely prolonged spell of hot sunny weather during the Olympics.
