David Cameron and Nick Clegg attempt to heal coalition rifts after the acrimony over Lords reform with a package of infrastructure investments designed to boost growth and refocus attention on both parties’ efforts to lift the economy.

The Coalition partners have today denied of being a “warring couple” — but an attempted relaunch of the Coalition was overshadowed by renewed infighting between Tories and Liberal Democrats.

The Prime Minister said it was “vital that the Government has the majority, the decisiveness and the strength” of both parties to govern in the face of a global economic crisis.

He has also demanded: “Does anyone think we would be better off with a minority administration that could not deliver its decisions?”

In a joint appearance at a railway depot at Smethwick, as the cabinet met to announce a £9bn investment in the rail network, the two men announced a renewed push with the publication of a mid-term review of the coalition later this summer.

Mr. Clegg has said House of Lords reform made Westminster “hot under the collar” but stated firmly that the Coalition would carry on.

He has stated: “None of that will stop us continuing to govern in the national interest for the whole country. We will not lose our nerve.”

However, Mayor Boris Johnson has predicted the partnership break up before 2015, just before the next general election and said: “Logically it must be true that at some stage before 2015 there will have to be a decision to part company and campaign on different perspectives.”

One of the powerful chairmen of Tory backbenchers, Graham Brady has also said he thinks the Coalition will not survive till the next election.
