One thousand jobs are facing the threat of being fired at Scotland’s largest Council, as it considers  to make cuts following this year’s local government settlement.

Glasgow, the largest local authority in Scotland, is facing a shortfall of £50 million over the next two years which could translate into 1,000 jobs lost, , having already reduced staff by almost 3,000 through voluntary redundancies and retirement over the past two years.

And neighbouring North Lanarkshire Council has announced 1,400 jobs could go as it attempts to save £74 million over the next three years.

Glasgow councillors hope to stick to a no compulsory redundancy policy but have indicated that job losses will be “targeted.”

Scotland had discussed the issue with the SNP Government’s local government minister Derek Mackay and Ross Martin, policy director for the independent think tank the Centre for Scottish Public Policy.

Scottish Labour’s local government spokesperson, Sarah Boyack has also joined the discussion from Edinburgh.

According to the council’s latest forecast, the council will have to find almost £50 million of savings over the next two years. A briefing paper on Glasgow City Council’s financial forecast for 2013-15 said there was a spending gap of £48.8 million due to rising costs and limits on Scottsh Government funding.

Glasgow Unison branch secretary, Brian Smith has told that this would definitely hit the services: “What does targeting mean? Does it mean it’s social workers or nursery workers? Three thousand staff have already gone since 2010. With another four-figure number going this will seriously affect front-line services.”
