Defence Minister of Canada, Peter MacKay, was attending a combined press conference at the Pentagon with U.S. Defence Secretary, Leon Panetta, on Friday when he said that “there have been a number of red lines placed already, and Iran has edged closer and stepped over those red lines on a number of occasions.”
In the scenario of international affairs red line is considered to be a last ultimatum after which a military action is promised. Mr. MacKay implied that the ruling mullahs of Iran have already surpassed multiple red lines in respect to their highly criticized nuclear program’s progress. When asked if MacKay supported Mr. Netanyahu’s red line ultimatum, he replied that “the more important question [is] …‘Is it the red line in the minds of the Israelis?’” Mr. Netanyahu explained that Israel’s red line is drawn at the point when Iran enriches its nuclear program to a 90 per cent of the weapons-grade uranium required for war.
In reply to a raised question in the press conference, Mr. MacKay justified his aggressiveness saying that he hopes this coming war could be averted. He stated “the preferred option always will be and remains these alternatives to keeping the pressure on Iran to bring about more acceptable behavior.”
Mr. MacKay was receiving William J. Perry prize in Washington for his input in the “education, research, outreach and knowledge-sharing in defence and security issues in the Western Hemisphere.”
