Former treasurer of British Conservative Party, Lord Alistair McAlpineThe former Conservative party treasurer, Lord McAlpine is in the process of reaching a settlement with the BBC over wrongly linking him to a child sex abuse scandal.

Mr. McAlpine’s lawyers have indicated that they were taking legal action after the programme led to the peer being mistakenly linked to a paedophile ring that targeted children at a care home in Wrexham in north Wales.

Lord McAlpine has said that the journalists should have contacted him beforehand to hear his side of the story before airing the wrong report.

He thanked the mistaken accuser Steve Messham, a victim of child abuse at the children care home for the courage to come forward and admit he was wrong.

Lord McAlpine expressed his sympathy for the accuser and said: “I was very grateful that he said that. I actually have a deep sympathy with him. He was obviously a man who suffered a lot in his life. I’ve been blessed and I’ve been very lucky but he has had a terrible time. But it wasn’t me.”

The media regulator, Ofcom has confirmed on Thursday regarding the investigation over the BBC’s false allegations made on Newsnightlooking at whether it breached BBC standards and the standards for unfair treatment to an individual and unwarranted infringements of privacy. It is also probing the commercial broadcaster ITV after individuals’ names were disclosed on the station’s This Morning programme.

The BBC had already apologised “unreservedly” for the report and said to reach a “conclusion” of the matter today. ITV apologised for Schofield passing the list to Mr. Cameron and admitted it was “clearly wrong and should have been handled differently”.

Lord McAlpine’s solicitor, Andrew Reid has told about reaching a settlement with BBC and said: “Lord McAlpine is more than aware that the ultimate people who will paying for any monies that he may receive are in fact the licence payers, the people who really own the BBC, and he is very much aware of this and hence any agreement that is reached is tempered in the light of that.”

McAlpine’s Lawyers have also appealed for those who named Lord McAlpine on Twitter to come forward and try to agree a settlement, rather than facing any legal action.
