Andy Coulson and Rebekah BrooksThe Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has announced today that ex-News International executive Rebekah Brooks and Ex-Downing Street communications chief Andy Coulson are to face new charges over bribing the police and public officials for information on the royal family and the military.

The Metropolitan Police began an inquiry into alleged bribery by newspapers last June after receiving information from News International, owner of The News of the World and The Sun. Police sent the CPS two files on conspiracy of committing misconduct in public life on 30 August.

Principal legal adviser to the director of public prosecutions, Alison Levitt QC has divided the charges into two separate files. Within the first, Mr. Coulson – David Cameron’s communications chief between 2007 and 2011, and former News of the World correspondent Clive Goodman face allegations of requesting and authorising payments to public officials in exchange for information – including a Palace phone directory known as the ‘green book’.

Mr. Coulson expressed his extreme disappointment over the CPS’s latest decision, denied the charges and would fight the charges in court.

In the second file, John Kay – the chief reporter at The Sun between 1990 and 2011, and Ms. Brooks are accused of paying Bettina Jordan-Barber, Ministry of Defence official, for information. The charging file says that Ms. Jordan-Barber received £100,000 between 2004 and 2011.

Mr. Coulson and Mr. Goodman will face two charges of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office. On the other hand, Ms. Brooks, Mr. Kay and Ms. Jordan-Barber will be facing one charge of conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office.

The five will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on a date to be determined.
