The doctors and pharmacists of Manitoba are criticizing the federal government’s refusal to stop drug companies from making generic versions of OxyContin. The Federal Health Minister of Canada, Leona Aglukkaq, communicated to her provincial and territorial subsidiaries that her department shall not interfere in the regulatory approval process of a generic form of a powerful and addictive painkiller.

The patent of the original drug is scheduled to expire on Nov. 25, so numerous companies are already lining up to initiate the process of making their own generic versions. This is a generic drug which will require a scientific review by Health Canada before approval.

A Winnipeg physician who caters people with addictions, Dr. Lindy Lee, shared her concerns about the generic oxycodone entering the market. Dr. Lee claims that now doctors will have to be conscious on how to prescribe it. She stated that “physicians are the gatekeepers to these drugs,” and “how can we do better pain assessments? How can we do addiction risk assessments? How can we have comfortable interviews where patients, if they’re getting into trouble, can put it on the table?”

The original company which manufactured the original drug, Purdue Pharma, had to recall several OxyContin medicines from shelves in March because it was being increasingly abused by drug users who misused it to make it more potent. The authorities of the provinces and territories, including Manitoba, had previously requested Health Canada to delay the approval for generic oxycodone, in view of the threat of more people abusing the drug in case a lower-cost form of becomes readily available.
