Hundreds of residents have been forced to evacuate their homes in the Welsh city of St Asaph on Tuesday after the River Elwy spilled from its banks.

Denbighshire County Council has stated that people residing in up to 500 properties in the Denbighshire city were advised to leave their properties and stay with their family and friends until levels go normal after water from the River Elwy burst through banks following heavy rain.

A spokesman for Denbighshire County Council said: “Over recent hours, concerns have been growing about the levels of the River Elwy at St Asaph. The river has now overtopped the flood defences in the north end of the city.”

The Environment Agency has two severe flood warnings in place for the River Elwy in the St Asaph area, with five other flood warnings in place elsewhere in Wales. The agency stated at 10.58 am: “River levels from the A55 to Rhuddlan are rising and are expected to do so for the next four hours.”

The evacuations come with more than 500 flood warnings in place across the country, with a total of 1,400 homes already reported as flooded.

Those travelling around the country also faced chaos with floods continuing to severely affect the road and railway services. Disruptions across several train services were reported, with the West Country again one of the worst-hit areas.

Drivers and residents across Britain faced further chaos due to the heavy rain.

Numerous roads including Worcestershire, County Durham, Tyne and Wear and Northumberland are among the most badly-affected areas and inaccessible.

Three people have been reported as dead so far due to flooding so far and around 900 homes have been evacuated across the country during the latest period of stormy rain downpour.
