The thrilling federal byelections have finally come to an end on Monday night, producing results which were not at all surprising. It concluded with Conservative Party retaining the two out of the three seats it had in Calgary Centre and Durham, Ont., whereas NDP securing the same seat of Victoria it previously won. Neither of the ridings was expecting a change and nor did it happen, except that two of them turned into close races.
Murray Rankin, NDP’s victorious candidate in Victoria, had to face an unexpected confrontation from the Green Party’s Donald Galloway. Rankin scored 37.2 per cent of the votes, whereas Galloway managed precisely 34.3. The federal NDP Leader, Tom Mulcair, was especially present in Victoria to congratulate the newest member, where he admitted that “we knew this would be a tough fight.”
In the battlefield of Calgary Centre, the Conservative Party kept its legacy, as it is considered their safest ridings in the country. Tory candidate Joan Crockatt had a close victory with 36.9 per cent votes to Liberal Harvey Locke’s 32.7 per cent. Crockatt announced after hearing about her victory at her campaign headquarters, that “Conservative support in Calgary Centre remains strong and growing.”
Lastly, Conservative Erin O’Toole scored an easy win in Durham, Ont., by reclaiming a Tory seat in the riding northeast of Toronto with 50.7 per cent. The seat was previously held by onetime Conservative MP and cabinet minister, Bev Odal, who resigned in July due to a huge public outcry regarding her ministerial expenses.
