The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir StarmerThe Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer has called to reopen the hundreds of dropped alleged child sexual abuse probes and review them under plans recently drawn to prevent the scandals like that of Jimmy Saville.

Mr. Starmer has regretfully said that “watershed moment” had been reached in how child sex abuse cases had been dealt during the past times.

Mr. Starmer has told the fact that many victims did not come forward to report the abusive incidents due to the fear of either not getting believed at first place. This happens because complainants distrust the authorities of conducting the probes by emphasizing the alleged suspect rather than the victim.

Mr. Starmer has assured that the future investigations will test the credibility of an allegation by focusing on the suspect as well as the alleged victim.

According to the newly devised plans, a panel will be established to review historical child sexual abuse cases where investigations into alleged abuse have not been pursued.

Mr. Starmer said: “What we are proposing is a scoping panel to look at cases where people have previously come forward but their case has not been proceeded with. The panel will advise chief constables on whether the case should be reopened.

“This is really to put some formality around the process by which either the police or victims could bring a case to the panel and say, ‘do you think this one deserves a second look?’. I think it’s more likely to be hundreds than thousands (of cases) but we’ll have to feel our way through it.”
