Alberta’s Premier Alison Redford has promised on Tuesday to “clearly set out” the deficit calculated in the coming provincial budget. The fiscal outline of 2013-14 budget are planned to be revealed on Thursday, which will divide the budget spending into operational, capital and savings budgets, and will also come along with a new money management law. All these technicalities have lead the opposition parties to doubt whether Albertans will have the aptitude of deciphering precisely the size of the deficit.

The assurance of Redford has come in sight of extremely serious questions raised by the Wildrose Opposition leader, Danielle Smith, who initially attempted on the first day to arrange a sitting of the legislature to cast doubt on Redford’s commitment of revealing the truth regarding the threatening deficit. Some are predicting the deficit to be as high as $4 billion. Smith questioned where “Albertans are looking for leadership,” and asked that “can we have a clear commitment today that in the budget on Thursday the government will not try to fudge or hide or bury or obscure the true size of the cash deficit?”

Redford replied that Finance Minister, Doug Horner, has been clear-cut with Albertans so far and will continue to be. She stated that “our minister of finance has clearly set out every quarter since the last election and before that … what the fiscal plan is and the fiscal situation is for this government.” Additionally, Redford alleged that “there is no reason to presume or even suggest for any reason that that would be any different on Thursday.”
