Former Pakistani cricketer wanted for trying to murder Geert Wilders

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) of the Netherlands has announced that it will prosecute a 37-year-old Pakistani man for sedition, threats, and attempted incitement to murder. The man is suspected of having offered approximately €21,000 in 2018 via an internet video for the assassination of Geert Wilders, the leader of the Dutch political party, Party for Freedom (PVV).

The suspect, who was residing in Pakistan at the time of the video, is currently still in Pakistan. The Netherlands has requested that Pakistan hand over the summons to him, but it is uncertain whether Pakistan will cooperate. In the past, Pakistan has not responded to requests from the Netherlands to hear suspects.

The Netherlands does not have a legal assistance treaty with Pakistan, and therefore, Pakistan is not legally obligated to cooperate. The hearing is scheduled for August 29, and Pakistani authorities have until then to cooperate with the transfer of the suspect.

Initially, the Public Prosecution Service did not confirm that the threat was directed towards Wilders. The Justice Department referred to the threat as being made against “a member of parliament.” However, shortly after this announcement, Wilders confirmed on Twitter that he was the intended target of the threat.

The suspect is reportedly a former cricketer and a celebrity in Pakistan. Due to his high profile, Dutch police and the Public Prosecution Service were able to identify him.

Threats against Wilders are not uncommon. Wilders is known for his controversial views on Islam and immigration, and has previously received death threats from extremist groups. In 2004, filmmaker Theo van Gogh was murdered in Amsterdam by a Dutch-Moroccan Islamist, which led to Wilders being put under constant police protection.

In response to the latest threat, Wilders stated that he will not be silenced and will continue to speak out against Islamization and terrorism. He also thanked the Dutch police and the Public Prosecution Service for their efforts in identifying the suspect.

The case highlights the challenges of prosecuting individuals who commit crimes across international borders. In this case, the suspect committed a crime in the Netherlands, but is currently residing in Pakistan. Without a legal assistance treaty in place, the Netherlands is unable to force Pakistan to cooperate in the transfer of the suspect.

However, this case also demonstrates the power of international cooperation in law enforcement. The Dutch police and Public Prosecution Service were able to identify the suspect despite his location in Pakistan, and are working with Pakistani authorities to bring him to trial.

In conclusion, the prosecution of the Pakistani man for offering money for the assassination of Geert Wilders highlights the ongoing threat of violence against public figures who express controversial views on Islam and immigration. It also demonstrates the difficulties of prosecuting international crimes and the importance of international cooperation in law enforcement.
