The Works and Pensions Committee have made the conclusion that the government’s Work Programme (WP) is “unlikely” to work for the most disadvantaged long-term unemployed individuals.

The Work Programme was launched in June 2011 by Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan-Smith which is aimed to support the jobless people who were unemployed for more than a year, in getting employed in U.K. struggling economy.

However, the Research conducted by the body has claimed that service providers were overlooking individuals from the most disadvantaged backgrounds, despite the fact the initiative appears to be improving after a difficult start.

The scheme comprised to be run through 18 main contractors alongside hundreds of smaller sub-contractors, usually made up from the voluntary, community and private sectors.

Within the programme, prime contractors are paid to help the unemployed people into a long-term position, with additional rewards for the harder-to-help unemployed.

A few MPs have argued that many of these organisations are still “parking” the most disadvantaged people in favor of assisting those who can easily get employed.

Chairwoman of the committee that produced the report, Dame Anne Begg has said: “The performance of the WP in its first 14 months was poor. There are signs that it is now improving significantly for mainstream jobseekers. However, it has proved much less successful to date in addressing the problems faced by jobseekers who face more serious obstacles to finding a job – people with disabilities, homeless people, and those with a history of drug or alcohol abuse.

“Too often, the reality seems to be Work Programme advisers swamped by caseloads of 120-180 jobseekers and employers deluged with poorly-matched CVs and under-prepared candidates.”
