U.K. Prime minister, David CameronU.K. Prime Minister David Cameron has responded to the growing controversy over links to U.S. internet monitoring through providing assurance that the British intelligence agencies operate within the law.

Mr. Cameron has defended the U.K. spy agencies and said that they are necessary to protect citizens in a “dangerous world” but they were properly scrutinised.

Ex-CIA worker at the National Security Agency (NSA), Edward Snowden has revealed to the Guardian newspaper that U.S. agencies have been secretly gathering data on people with the help of nine major internet companies, including Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Yahoo and Skype.

The existence of this database known as “Prism” has raised concerns over the potential intrusion by the U.S. in to the communications of Britons.

The row over the controversy crossed the Atlantic after documents emerged suggesting British eavesdropping agency GCHQ had access to the system since at least June 2010, and generated 197 intelligence reports from it last year.

Foreign Secretary William Hague will face probing in parliament later on Monday regarding the links between GCHQ and the U.S. government’s Prism programme.

After the revelation, Mr. Snowden has condemned the U.S. government’s attempts “to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberty”.

Mr. Snowden, 29, uncovered his identity after fleeing to Hong Kong, telling reporters: “My sole motive is to inform the public as to that which is done in their name and that which is done against them.”
