U.K. Prime minister, David CameronPrime Minister David Cameron – the Twitter latecomer has mistakenly endorsed a fake account of one of Cabinet colleagues.

Mr. Cameron had warned about the danger of Twitter before he signed up to the social network – but now it looks like that he himself have fallen into one of its classic traps.

The Prime Minister has fallen prey to the danger of Twitter on Monday as he has posted in support of Iain Duncan Smith’s welfare reforms: “We’re rolling out a cap on Benefits today – @IDS_MP and I are determined to make work pay and help the UK compete on the #GlobalRace.”

The @IDS_MP account is in fact a spoof account of the Works and Pensions Secretary and is quite apparent from the tweets.

Mr. Cameron did a blunder by including the link to a parody account for the Work and Pensions Secretary. And the blunder may have been avoided if the PM had checked the IDS-MP account more carefully.

Suspicions about the account would have been raised by examining a recent tweet by “Iain Duncan Smith” which said: “I’ve always supported a Mansion Tax. Your Tax buys my Mansion. Chin chin!”

Other clues to the true nature of the IDS-MP account include the posts “a thrifty way to keep cool in this heat wave is to dab the ice from your Champagne bucket onto your forehead” and “I’m getting a silk handkerchief embroidered with gold braid saying ‘in it together’ with my pay rise”.

In response to the Prime Minister’s erroneous endorsement was retweeted hundreds of times, IDS-UK has posted the message: “Chin chin Dave. Round mine for a Pimms later?”

The prime minister’s official spokesman later made light of the mix-up on Monday, saying: ‘I think it’s hashtag one to take on the chin.’
