London based anti-illegal immigration pilot schemeBritish Business Secretary Vince Cable has called the anti-illegal immigration campaign that features a van displaying advertising which says illegal immigrants should go home or face arrest as “stupid and offensive”.

The Home Office mobile billboard pilot scheme has seen billboards driven around six London boroughs; Barnet, Hounslow, Barking and Dagenham, Ealing, Brent and Redbridge; warning illegal immigrants to “go home or face arrest”.

Mr. Cable has described the scheme would have little effect on the target audience in the light of the fact they were unlikely to even be able to read the billboards mounted on vans.

The business secretary has told Jeremy Vine on the BBC’s Andrew Marr show: “I think it’s stupid – I mean the whole idea that illegal immigrants have got a sophisticated grasp of English read at a distance – and I think it is offensive.”

“It is designed, apparently, to sort of create a sense of fear in the British population that we have a vast problem of illegal immigration. We have a problem but not a vast one, and it’s got to be dealt with in a measured way.”

Mr. Cable has also added that Lib Dems in the coalition had not been consulted on the idea and that he believe it to be “very unlikely” to continue.

However, the Home Office spokesperson has told to be “clear that this is already working”.

The spokesman did not deliver the figures on levels of response but said the Home Office was “looking at what they can take forward” from the London pilot scheme.

The pilot campaign has also featured the leaflets, posters and messages in local newspapers, carrying the same message.

The pilot scheme cost just under £10,000, which is economical than forcibly removing someone. According to the Home Office, the whole process costs about £15,000.

The campaign aims to trigger the voluntary returns of the illegal immigrants.
