The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s son Prince George will be christened on Wednesday in a privately held ceremony at Chapel Royal in London’s St James’s Palace in the presence of three generations of future British kings and royal family friends.
Young George – the future Supreme Governor of the Church of England and “Defender of the Faith” – was born on July 22,2013.
The three-month-old baby – the future king, will be baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, the head of the world’s Anglicans, who called it “the next hugely important moment” in the newly born prince’s life.
A Church of England christening comprises a new baby having holy water poured on its head – the baby is not fully immersed.
Present monarch Queen Elizabeth II will also be gathered for the third-in-line prince’s baptism, where she will be joined by heir apparent Prince Charles and second-in-line William.
The ceremony aims to be held in private to be hidden from the world’s media.
Royal officials have reported that only “close members of both families” will attend the baptism, reflecting William and Catherine’s belief in keeping their son out of the spotlight.
Princess Diana’s former private secretary, Patrick Jephson has explained that the current ceremony would deliver a strong message regarding the royal family’s durability, as he said: “For the royal family, a christening is important because it shows the continuing survival of the dynasty.
“It reinforces the public perception that the British royal family is going to be around for a long time to come.”
