Metropolitan police has successfully rescued three “traumatised” women from a South London residence on Thursday after three decades of slavery and arrested two people on discovery of the captives.

Scotland Yard police headquarters have told the victims were a 69-year-old Malaysian, a 57-year-old Irish woman and a 30-year-old Briton in a “highly traumatised” condition.

Detectives arrested a 67-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman from their home in Lambeth, south London.

Police has indicated that alarms were raised during the last month when a charity organization, Freedom Charity which supports the victims of forced marriages, informed them about the women prisoners.

It is believed that the charity had received a phone call from the traumatized Irish woman in October who told them she was being held against her will in a house in London.

Further investigations led to discovery of the house, where all enslaved women were located.

After collaborative efforts by the charity and Scotland Yard, the women were all rescued and taken to a place of safety.

According to the Scotland Yard, the 30-year-old British woman had allegedly never had any contact with the outside world. However it is not yet confirmed whether she was born in the house but she is understood to have been in servitude her whole life.

A Met’s human trafficking unit member, Detective Inspector Kevin Hyland has said: “All three women were deeply effected and traumatised.

“Their lives were greatly controlled. For much of it, they would have been kept on the premises. The women were recovered some weeks ago but the arrests were made this morning.”

The Freedom Charity’s founder, Aneeta Prem has said who believed to be victims of physical and mental harm – were “absolutely terrified” of the arrested individuals.

The investigating officers have told the two suspects have been taken to a south London police station where they remain in custody.
