Kennedy’s cousin, Michael Shakel, walked out of court on Thursday as a free man after eleven years, while he awaits another trial. Michael Shakel was convicted for the 1975 murder of his neighbor, Martha Moxley, a fifteen year old. A Connecticut judge decided to set him free after declaring his bail for 1.2 million dollars and giving him a list of rules to abide by. Conditions included refraining Shakel from leaving Connecticut without approval from the court and also from contacting the victim’s family, an order to wear a GPS tracking instrument and reporting to a bail commissioner.

As the judge announced the decision of setting Shakel free, the courtroom echoed with applause from Shakel’s family sitting at one side of the court room. ‘We look forward to Michael being vindicated and justice finally being served,’ said Shakel’s family in a statement. ‘We are thankful to God that after 11 and one half years he will be reunited with his sons. We are grateful for the love and prayers of Michael’s many supporters who have sustained him through this ordeal.’

On the other hand, Martha Moxley’s mother, Dorthy Moxley, was disappointed by the decision of the court. ‘It’s been a little over 11 years now’ said Dorthy, referring to Shakels conviction in 2002. ‘The whole thing didn’t have to be this way, but I think it’s a lesson to parents. If your child does something wrong, face up to it. … I’m disappointed, but this is life.’
