Environment Secretary, Owen PatersonThe environment secretary Owen Peterson has warned coastal communities in the south and west of England over another spell of severe weather with rain, wind and high tides is in the way to hit the U.K.

After chairing latest session of the government’s Cobra emergency committee, in which different agencies discussed the U.K.’s response to floods that resulted in cut off power and closed roads, advised the public to “keep in close touch” with the Environmental Agency as the authorities prepare for another 48 hours of dangerous weather.

Dozens of flood warnings are issued at several places in England, Wales and Scotland.

Cobra – Cabinet Office Briefing Room A in Whitehall, brings together ministers, civil servants and others such as the police and Environment Agency – depending on the severity of the emergency that needs a response.

Mr. Paterson, after his meeting with the Met Office, the Environment Agency and officials from all agencies including the transport, energy and communities and local government departments, has told the public to remain alert as the upcoming “floods and the cost will be dangerous.”

He has added: “We are working very closely with local communities, power companies, transport companies and utilities companies to make sure they are well prepared for the bad weather that is coming.”

Mr. Paterson has also ensured after chairing continuous sessions with the Environment Agency and local councils that they “are on the ground and offering all possible support to their communities”.

He has further confirmed: “We remain in touch with local councils in at-risk areas.”

“With a number of flood alerts for Thursday, including several areas which have previously been flooded, I urge everyone in affected areas to sign up to Environment Agency flood warnings and follow the advice issued.”

Mr. Peterson has also criticised the power companies for their failure to respond to customers’ complaints recently, saying they had been issued a great of warnings of severe weather and “were not prepared”.

He has insisted not to leave “people without power for days again.”
