Colleagues of Jim Coutts unanimously agree on two things about him without a doubt, namely that he was a progressive Liberal who firmly believed in a united Canada, and that he was an impressive and influential key adviser to two Liberal prime ministers. 75-years-old former Liberal staffer passed away giving up to cancer just before midnight Dec. 31, in Toronto.

Mr. Coutts has had experience of working with two former Prime Ministers, Lester B. Pearson and Pierre Trudeau, serving as principal secretary to the latter. In a tweet posted on Wednesday by Liberal Leader, Justin Trudeau, he stated that “starting 2014 on a sad note, my wise and good friend Jim Coutts lost his battle with cancer last night.” Mr. Coutts is often remembered for his work with Pearson from 1963 to 1966 and Trudeau from 1975 to 1981, as they praise him as highly organized, principled man who carried considerable influence in Trudeau’s office and was the driving force behind many of his key policies in the 1970s.

Former press secretary to Trudeau, Patrick Gossage, mentioned that “he was one of the best political brains in Canada.” Gossage alleged that “he knew what to say to Trudeau in 1980, because Trudeau did not want to run again. He was fed up; he just wanted to go back to the country and chop trees.” He added that “Coutts said to Trudeau: There’s a lot you want to do with the constitution, and I think you could win.”
